    Having the skull cracked in half isn't bad in itself, but keeping it symmetrical and filling the middle with similar shading values makes it look kind of awkwardly wide. Especially from a distance, where the first things ya key on is eyes.

    Also, this may be one too many trendy elements; hatchets, horned skulls, bird skulls, roses and moons. None of them is terrible, but it may come across as a grab bag.

    The shading on the frame and hatchets is sick.

    i like this a lot, there may be some shading issues like cynicdesign mentioned, but otherwise, definitely on the right track. i like the version on the left with the background better, too.
