Not sure if anyone here still does this, but last time I checked (over a year ago) people were still defending Spec Art like a Republican defends Trump.

This blog/vid pretty much sums up what many of us have been saying. Say "NO" to spec art!

creative market is partially owned by threadless, you know the site where artists submit designs for no money to a contest that most don't win. the brand some of you guys worship but mostly everyone here respects.

Yes, it's fashionable and hip to hate on spec work. yawn.

I see threadless as a different type of spec work. In traditional spec work you are told what to design which might not be what you are into and you may not be able to sell it to someone else because of the specifics of the project. Also the reward usually isnt that big to make up for the work you put into the project.

With threadless its up to you. You are a designer expressing what you are interested in. No one is telling you what you should design and you can do whatever you want with the design if it isnt chosen on threadless. You also get a bigger reward... last time I checked they paid $2,000. So for a lot of people the reward outweighs the risk.

I do respect threadless because they value the designers. Most people that have SPEC jobs don't.

I think Threadless has changed their royalty payout, but you'd have to check their site for specifics. I also believe they now allow artists to retain ownership of their designs, something Threadless didn't do before.
