If your name's not on the list... better luck next year.

But in all seriousness if you aren't on this list and think you would be a good candidate then please E-mail me or write on this thread. If you have very little site activity or you have poor track record of getting into community selected then assume it's a no.

Some people I didn't include because I'm not sure they use the site much anymore so please don't assume that because you aren't on the list that I didn't include you to be a douche bag I just don't want to give Jared a mile long list (and it took me ages to find everyone and link... twice because the first post failed and I had to re-write).
  • Cameron Latham

Solid list. I haven't seen Jeff, Corey, or Jason post in a minute, but they could still be lurking around. So, what now? Sorting out the submission guidelines?

(in b4 this turns into a "wah wah wah - why wasn't I chosen?" thread instead)
  • fuggart

I asked Jeff and Corey if they were interested before I added them to the list. Jason I thought was still about but I could be wrong! I think that everyone on that list is already aware of what constitutes as a community selected standard design so no real need to explain it in my opinion but it could be worth establishing a list for the people submitting still? just to refresh their memories.

I think we also need to establish if there are any other members who still use this site that would make good admins... there have to be some I missed after all.

The next step after establishing the coherent CS guidelines should be to update the TOTD algorithm as well to give newer designs a chance of getting that slot. I also think that we need people to be assigned to social media to help give Mintees more presence outside of the site itself. I know that people have complained in the past that these things are redundant at this point and they could be right but something tells me that when you have this many people still caring about a website that has essentially be dormant for the best part of 3 years then it's worth trying to revive.

For the algorithm I suggest the following conditions:

    - less than 1 year old
    - minimum 15 likes on the design
    - Community Selected only (don't want people getting all their mates to bump up some horrendous piece from all tees)
    - no designs more than once (if at all possible?)

If the TOTD algorithm get's updated I think we will have more reason to vote on designs again. I don't even bother these days because I know most people on here personally and there's no need to try and help their good work try to get TOTD because it's impossible with the current algorithm.

Is there anything we can do to just update the aesthetics of the header on the website? you know like drop the gradient and have just block black? same with the logo? gradients are fairly dated and that sounds like a VERY quick fix?
  • Cameron Latham

Yeah, even just updating the logo, header, and header links/icons would be enough to freshen things up.

Agreed on the algorithm; it's impossible to hit 44 likes on a design these days, but I think 15 is reasonable.

I'm absolutely terrible with social media, so I'm voting myself out of that job, but someone should definitely take charge of those. Get Mintees on Instagram as well. Throw up TOTDs and maybe start a "designer of the week", "brand of the week" promotion kind of thing.

I would be fine at running the Facebook account. IG and Twitter are total write offs for me. I know that some people on here are more into twitter than Facebook so they would be good. For IG it should be someone who knows how to use it properly. DOOOM for example has thousands of followers on there. I have about 800 which goes to show how little I harness it.

Designer of the week would be sick on IG for sure. People would really dig being on that.

I'll try to quickly mock up how the header could look without the gradients etc to see how easy it'd be to update
  • fuggart

There were other bits I think could be done to improve. For example all of the tags at the top would look better at the bottom I think. just having community selected and all tees options at the top would be cool
  • fuggart

Suggestions for a larger redesign of the site:

    - the ability to like a design without clicking into it.
    - log in issues resolved would obviously be great. I have to log in frequently when commenting and liking/voting etc
    - no gradients.
    - less links everywhere. the whole top area with the tags and stuff is really overkill. Should just be 2 tabs at the top "com selected" and "all tees" with a "post new tee" button nice and big and obvious.
    - continuous scrolling. I find that 9 times out of 10 once a design is on page 2 of CS it receives no more likes... continuous scrolling would keep people on there a bit longer like it does on dribbble. I was on someones dribbble yesterday and I was all the way back on 2012 posts within like 2 minutes of looking through. I'd have normally clicked off of their profile by then.
  • cityhall

These are all awesome suggestions. Viva la mintees!
  • BodilPunk

yeah! i can't wait to get started this new era.
  • dbdesign

There are tons upon tons of design changes that could be made to improve this site's flow and functionality...but it'll take forever.

I think if this site mimics the dribbble look it will work better.

Also, why does there have to be an "all tees" section...if a design doesn't get approved, tough shit better luck next time. I think the home should begin with featured tees, then "community selected" should populate the rest, and the other page should be "forums" that's all. Cut down or rearrange the ad space, remove some of the unnecessary junk and it's good...clean and simple.

I totally agree with you Tom. Also, it would be nice to have all the icons on the header in Hi-res. I do not know about you guys, but I see them blurred on my retina display.

If fixing all those things requires to hire someone to do the job I am available for a donation. I am sure I am not the only one who got some money in the past thanks to Mintess/Emptees so I think it is time to be thankful for that.
  • babix

awesome job fuggart! i love everything you stated there, and i think an instagram account would really draw new guys to the site. admins please make this come true!

    Agree with Dan,

And in the tee section, what if just put All Tees - Finished Tees - Artwork For Sale - etc ( like Critiques or WIP), so the visitors can sort out easily, no confusion, and simple.

i always liked the wip-section on emptees back in the days, so this would be a cool idea to really help new designers how to step up their game. BUT it would need true and helpful criticism not only just sarcastic comments we have nowadays.
  • fuggart

I wouldn't get too excited guys... as I said it was just suggestions as Jared and co have made it clear that a site redesign isn't on the cards right now. As Saint said I'd be keen to chip in to fund a redesign though as long as it was took seriously and didn't take ages (risking the site completely dying off). it's the one decent music industry designer resource available and it helped me when I started out. I don't need it now technically but I do support the cause and want upcoming designers to have a shot at getting noticed

Yeah, there a few questionable designs. If the voter change hasn't been implemented yet, that may explain it. A few of the weaker designers are from folks on auto-approve, which nothing can be done about.

+ is it possible for the weaker tees that are cs to get deleted? or once cs they are and will be in the cs section?

I suppose an admin could delete it if they wanted, but there's no real reason to. Art is subjective and apparently enough people thought the designs were good enough to be CS. They would only be deleted if the designer deleted them.

Jared and myself are currently reviewing the list of voters to ensure that only the highest quality of work is let through. As Cameron has said it takes just as many to up vote a design as it does to down vote and it's subjective. I think it's simply an issue of certain voters having lower standards than what we desire. It will all be smoothed out soon

Like the idea of getting more voters on to help increase activity! I'm not one to complain or anything and I haven't been the most active lately, but I submitted two shirts not too long ago and didn't get any email of approved/denied. Was just wondering why that is, I think they are pretty up to par of what is expected on this site. Thanks guys!

i don't think you actually get a mail for any conformation?

you just need to keep an eye on the site + not to intend anything but alot of designs were accepted by auto approval as so i've heard and the difference now is that the designs are getting denied / approved by a group of people

you receive an email, when your design is approved. i am not sure if you get an email when you're on auto approve. and as the cetegory is named "community selected" there have always been people voting on a design. but there weren't as many voters active in the past, thats why it mostly took like forever to see a new design on the selected page. now there are new voters chosen to be more active on the site to get approvals/denials a lot quicker than before :)

Silver Tongue Thanks guys! I submitted them Sept 13th. Should I have heard something by now?

you should get an approval-email if your designs were chosen in 2 days latest. if not, i am sorry and they weren't chosen for community selected (there aren't emails sent if a design isn't chosen) this time.
