if someone from studio akt defends those designs and says they're good i'll be really surprised.

has nothing to do with bashing akt. but design spin is full of awful designs.

There are design and art schools all over this country where they never want to tell the students, "This career is really not for you." They just take the tuition and push the students through. More students really, really need "the talk". There are so many people who really, really suck. Kind of sad.

Yep, I see those portfolios and resumes quite often and it makes me a combination of upset and sad. Those schools need to be shut down.

Even worse is when those students then, somehow, become the teachers. I experienced that in one of my courses. It was so bad that I was approached by the majority of my class asking for help since it was a web development class and the professor was using Adobe Muse as the tool to teach coding which is not the right tool for teaching kids how to code a website.

This community should create its own teaching section. Call it Mint Universitee.

I went to an art school exactly like that.

I get what you're saying, but at what point do you tell someone to find a different career path? Anyone who is starting out in a creative industry is going to suck, for a long time. How many years did it take the majority of us to get good at what we do? Wouldn't surprise me if it was more than 4. So telling someone they suck and should quit after two years when everyone sucks after only two years isn't going to help or solve the problem. It would just result it nobody who goes to college ever entering the industry.
  • MonkeyMouth

Anyone who's starting out is bad, yes. But you can tell if people have some kind of talent, creativity, new way of doing things, etc.
Sooo many people, go through school/life thinking they're awesome at drawing/taking pictures/singing/whatever, when in fact, they suck. The problem is parents/teachers/friends not telling those people the reality: "You suck at what you do, do something else you piece of ass!".

You can tell by the way people draw, if they are going to become good or not. The guy who did the pig Dobi posted, will not. Ever.
I went to school with a girl, one of the most annoying i've ever met, who thought she was a grade A photoshopper. Because no one ever told her any different. She took her final exams, showing off a portfolio consisting of nothing else than tutorials she did when she first started, 4 years earlier. Tutorials a 10 year old could do. Photoshopping fangs onto people, stuff like that.

I dont think it's mean, unfair, or anything of the like, to tell people, after 2-3-4-5 years or whatever, that they probably need to find another path in life. If anything, you're helping them.
  • Killer Napkins

This was the fifth design I posted, I suppose 5 years ago. It is complete shit.

I really wonder though about most of these shown here.. How long have they been actually fucking around with what they are doing. "

I feel like the first 3 years of being on this site was the most progress shown (drawing wise).. then kind have just been plateauing/gradually progressing from there.

Maybe saying "find another career path" is a bit harsh.. I feel like most of them, only learn their drawing/illustration skills from looking at tshirts. Saying, learn to draw better, or learn what good aesthetics is about may be more helpful to beginners.

I don't disagree with you, I just don't know what the correct amount of time is before you should tell someone to do something different. If someone had stopped me after 2 or 3 years, I wouldn't be working full time as a web developer/graphic designer now.
