Hello, I've been super inspired lately to learn and get dirty with some graphic work. Ill jump right in:

I'm working on a logo for a company called FLOWERS. Where the idea behind the brand (in short) is to pay attention to the little details in life. Every grand scheme is made up of little events that bring meaning to ones life. So slow down and smell the flowers. On a more physical level, products will range from floral button ups with unique prints & detilas/5panels/shirts/enamel pins with slightly more 'mature' refined designs for people (unisex 20-30 yrs?) keeping it fresh. Here are some sketches.

First idea: Font, Placement, Colors

Second idea:

Issues? Similar art i've seen out there:

http://www.tamaraguion.com/Happy%20Eye.htm

-I feel my flower logo doesn't reflect the aesthetic in mind. It needs to be a flower without being pussy
-Maybe it looks a little too cartoony..? Not sure.
-Can leaving vowels out of a name still work?
-If not, Other names include: Grand Scheme, Observer, Harmony, Notice, Gander

Ill post more process work as I progress.

I really like the first one as it doesn't look as pussyish like you mentioned. To me looks stronger than the other ones maybe sharpen up the edges like the second one. I say keep at it until you're really happy with it and run with it.

first problem is that you have 16 ideas that are exactly the same. the flower thing is alright but its so expected and bland as a first idea.

The no vowels reads fine with Flowers. I mean, its a flower haha, you can't really get too hung up on the "pussyish" look. You said it will have flower prints etc. so I wouldn't try to deviate too far or get too abstract or else it won't seem like it belongs.

The overall idea could be tweaked I think. Go outside the box with some of those ideas, like Craig said, they're basically the same thing. Do different kinds of flowers, do different compositions, do something you don't like, do something you wouldn't think would work. Anything. You'd be surprised how much that can help ideas haha. I'd definitely try some other things first though since you're still in a very early stage and you don't seem to know EXACTLY what you want.

    Somaon: Working on it
Craig: I was so set on a sweet flower icon I didn't even think about sketching other ideas, stupid
Andrew: I'm finding sketching really does help grow the idea, thanks.

Heres a slew of more sketches. Anything poppin?

That star thing makes me think of a Pokemon (after looking at the star pokemon...it's basically identical)

Pokemon in question (Staryu) : MUTHA FUCKIN POKEMON YO
  • Dr_Worm

I already posted that dude. It does though

Ohh lol, I thought you posted that as an option. Mah bad. In that case,it's similar, but I think you're OK.

An idea using an origami flower that may look too boat like. (benny gold uses an origami plane http://bennygold.com/)

  • Matt Borchert

I prefer the possible direction of the origami flower, I wouldn't worry about the benny gold paper plane.
  • Denimous Snake

Into the first logo you posted, I hate the font on it.
  • Skull With Hair

a lot of those are super cool, but i think you might find some of them a little dated in only a couple years. maybe try some different styles. something a little more loose could be cool. a couple years back i did a logo for the band four year strong and one of my favorite, but unused, concepts was a flower. totally far off from where you're at so maybe it helps to see the other direction...

  • FakeBonanza

    Diplo, is that you? haha....

I really like this direction from Skull with hair. It is more along the lines of not too "pussy".

Also I think your type needs a lot of work. Maybe try it in a custom cursive script
  • Dr_Worm

Skull With Hair: Those are helping broaden my perspective, thanks
Perception Apparel: Yes the type needs work, I've just been plugging in and playing. Time to practice my cursive..
  • Dr_Worm

    Which sketches are standing out?

Idea 3: Used a font I found for now. Ill scan and edit the best of the sketches to make it all original.

  • Dr_Worm

    Origami flower take 2.
How do you feel about leaving vowels out of words these days?
  • Andrew Haines

I think adding some petals to that would make it look more like a flower. It really looks like a boat how it is now. I don't exactly think that the type works with the image there either.
  • mekazoo

dude you're thinking too much and jump to different branches all at once. I think you should choose which sketch/direction you like and work on details. Also you have a nice W in the middle why not use it as a flower.
  • Jason Carne

Between this thread and the Red Tilt one branding doesn't really seem like it's your thing - at least it isn't yet, and I'm not saying that to knock you down or anything. The Keaton Henson-y illustrations seems to be more of your strong suit and is what in all likelihood landed you this logo gig, stop over thinking it, do something in your style and work on concept, concept, concept. The vector art you're trying to do here feels forced and unnatural and the type feels disjointed from the illustration in each example. Here's a quick 2 min drawing I did based on the information at the top of your post:

Not to say that it's a fantastic logo by any means, but it's fully formed idea that works an illustration and some lettering together in a cohesive manner - work on pumping out sketches, not finals.
  • Skull With Hair

i like #59... oh wait thats mine! hahah. jk.

pick up one of these books, they have been an invaluable resource throughout my growth as an identity designer.

  • Dr_Worm

Thank you all for the input so far, its really appreciated!

Jason Carne: Thanks for the inspiration.
    Skull With Hair: Ordered, thanks.

Here are some ideas I've been working on. I think the brush circle with thin angled letters is the style I might change to.

  • treycook

Just pick one, I could see a successful company behind any of those logos.
  • babix

i know how hard it is to pick a logo for yourself. good luck man

    anyway, i like this one

but i don't like that font

    Bottom right is pretty nice
  • Dr_Worm

    New possible direction, thoughts?
  • Jupit

if you want to use that rune... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfsangel
I doubt, a lot of people would care, though.
  • Dr_Worm

    pretty sweet, thanks.

is the direction to be a tumblr brand? i see all of that stuff and it makes me cringe. as swh said, go a little more timeless unless its fad brand that at this point is already 2 years behind the curve on tumblr stuff. a good logo should still hold up as the brand evolves or even become a guider for where it will go. its good to see you grinding it out and making so many sketches and doing the hard work, but each concept you post(not on the pads) is so very different. what that says to me is that the brand has no real solid idea of their look and/or demographic.

with the varying degree of options and styles, people will say they like the one that they could personally envision the brand as looking. you're gonna have to pick one and develop from critiques about if its successful or not.
  • Dr_Worm

Damn it I like that version too. Thanks for the words. The thought of being a tumblr brand is gross

I need to do some more thinking about demographic

I don't think you quite got the point, or read the Wiki entry... it's a symbol associated with the 3rd Reich, Nazis etc.

Oh shit no way.. Ill probably do some more work as the latest one has been called not timeless enough too. Im still confused as to what makes a timeless design though.
  • Craig Robson

isnt it time to hire someone?
  • Dr_Worm

No way, i've already learned a ton and this process is super valuable to me. As long as people keep critiquing Ill be happy.
craig I'm curious of your opinion?
  • johncarrington

    Irony at its finest

  • Dr_Worm

Haha yeah i suppose so, wasn't thinking along those lines
  • Jake DL

the direction swh and jason gave were really nice and original. the current options you have are easily forgettable in my opinion.

If you want a timeless logo, hire Carne already.
  • Dr_Worm

Right, but thats not the route I'm choosing or the answer Im' looking for.
    what qualities make something timeless?
