Hi mintees we are working on renovating this old red barn into artist studio spaces. Its a big project to undertake but hopefully the kickstarter will come through for us.

Heres a little logo I did up and was looking for critiques or
comments. This will eventually be printed on stickers and shirts!
I was hoping for a homegrown sort of organic print look

  • jchristopher

An old barn would make for a great work space; hopefully it works out for you guys.

As far as the logo is concerned you may try leaving out the lines underneath the openings at the bottom; having the bottom line weave up and down may up the interesting factor a bit and clean it up at the same time. Really you may not even need the white outline around the building, or maybe lessen the weight a bit.
  • Dr_Worm

Yeah I see what your saying, thanks.

  • Dr_Worm

  • Killer Napkins

I don't dig the white outline around it all.. I think the lines on the building indicating wood panels should be more even/level, go nearly all the way across and hit the edges more.
  • jumpy

yep chop the white, maybe try a real wood grain texture across it.
  • Dr_Worm

Yeah I see what your saying. Heres an update

  • joeROOSTER

Looks better. What if you flipped it and had it angle the other way and deleted the top window in the roof?
  • Jupit

yep, what he said. text from bottom left to up right ususally looks better than the other way around.
  • Anthony Smith

Its getting closer for sure. Im always a tad squeamish when i see people try this type of look for a logo, can very easily look amateur. Made a significant leap in the last revision though, so I think itll look good.

Next step in my opinion is to think about holding back on some of those quirky hand rendered elements. leave something that reminds the audience that its a considered logo and not just a doodle.
  • jchristopher

Ya, that's already looking so much better without the white.
  • Dr_Worm

Thank you all for the words!
    Update

  • Dr_Worm

Any last input before I end this thread?
  • junostudio

I personally don't like it and don't feel that it is very professional. I understand the organic and natural look you're going for, but this could still be better. By appearance it isn't something I would donate toward.
  • Cameron Latham

I hate to come at you like this, but this looks like it was made in MS Paint. Like Anthony said, hand-drawn, "organic" designs can easily end up looking amateur if you aren't already adept in that style. In all honesty, I would start over from scratch and go another route style-wise.
  • bleet

id make the "red tilt' letters into a shape of the barn. So the red on top and the tilt underneath. So the actual name is the barn walls if that makes sense, then some kind of roof on top.

This does not read as a logo at all, sorry

    Way better.

dude gives you solid advice... makes a great design you could have ran with and you come back to the community with this? no point asking for help and then throwing it back in peoples faces with an eye burner.
  • Dr_Worm

Ouch, ok haha I make eye burners.. I'm trying though. And learning

    Update: Thanks Bleet.
  • Cameron Latham

The hand-drawn look is just not working for you. Bleet's logos are great.
  • Dr_Worm

    I love hand-drawn, I guess I need more patience/practice.

    too home improvement ish.

drop the hand drawn over attended stuff and aim for something more like a stamp. something that keeps the feel but without the MS paint wobblyness.
  • Ellis

On top of what all these guys are suggesting, I would suggest you take some time with it. It seems you have been spitting out numerous variations of this concept all within minutes.

Take some time and dwell on the concept a little while longer. Hand sketch some stuff first to get a solid idea, and then go to the computer.

There's a reason brands pay top dollar for excellent logos, and it's not because they are done quickly.
  • Dr_Worm

    Thanks Craig! and Ellis!

I think It's starting to work a little better

  • Craig Robson

its getting there. please kill the texture and that copyright scribble.

the short story is that you are looking to attract PROFESSIONALS, presumably to get them to rent space, for money. nobody is going to part with cash if it looks like a kid drew your logo.

something polished and sturdy and trustworthy will inspire the same sort of reaction in your potential renters.
  • mjrupp

Here's what I would do if I was you:
-Sketch up with at least 10-15 variants/ideas for the logo.
-Ask the Mintees community to vote on their favorite of the lot.
-Watch some printmaking tutorials on YouTube.
-Buy a simple and cheap printmaking kit. (http://www.utrechtart.com/Speedball-Deluxe-Block-Printing-Kit-MP-38001-001-i1014988.utrecht)
-Run some prints of the logo and scan them.
    -Be impressed with yourself.

    OR hire a professional.

If you want to go for an organic look, why not do it by hand or on any other traditional media. The problem when trying to do so digitally is that if you have not mastered your technique it will often look like some kid did it on MS Paint like someone said before. So my suggestion is: don't limit yourself to your tablet and try different ways of doing things, get out of the comfort of digital media and sketch (a lot) by hand.

Here's an example of great organic branding for your inspiration: http://www.anagrama.com/portafolio/134-santa-cruz

lol the copyright should belong to the mintees crowd, we've done 90% of the work for you, and you aint even done yet ...seriously are you afraid of someone stealing it from here? id offer more advice but that sounds wack :/
  • Craig Robson

go look at anything the Draplin Design Co does, ive heard Aaron talk and he mentioned sending 100 logo ideas over as a first draft for a company.

    100.

Because slapping a copyright logo on something automatically means its impossible to steal right? As if anyone would actually want to steal it.

    didnt stop me!
  • Dr_Worm

Yep I know, my buddy doesn't know about the internet too much so he just wanted to be safe.

    Craig: Wow

    Heres what she looks like
Any one know about video too?

Great logo, Craig! Did you make that yourself?

Nothing about this is working. Bleet was on to something though.

I see your list of clients.. I don't really have one yet but I'm determined with this project to follow through.
  • Dr_Worm

Here's an idea of the final logo (I think). Im going to take mjrupp's advice and screen print the logo/scan it in for the final product
