Hey Mintees peeps!

It gives me great pleasure to finally show you something I have been working on behind the scenes for a long time now. Big Bad City was an idea that developed after I randomly decided to draw an image of a girl with a chainsaw, way back in 2010. After drawing it my imagination started going wild with a whole concept - a Mad-Max-on-steroids graphic novel type story that I could immerse myself in creatively. I could develop my own characters/stories etc... The Chainsaw girl I named Daisy - as in "Daisy Chains".

After I settled on a name and designed a logo I decided to keep the chainsaw girl image back and look into developing my own brand. I've always been hugely inspired visually by post apocalyptic films like Mad Max, Cyborg and the Fist of the North Star anime. As an artist I have been craving to find the time to work on more personal stuff the last few years. I'm very thankful for all the commissions I get - its like a dream come true - but a huge part of me is deeply frustrated as I can't seem to juggle my personal work with deadlines and pressure. I physically couldn't put in any more hours than I do without completely burning out.

I have a life long best friend called Chris Baker. We have worked on lots of projects over the years, and he's skilled on the website/marketing side of things. It's a nice little combo, I can do the art and graphics and he can make the websites work! A year later I spoke to him about my ideas and we thought it would be a fun thing to work on together. We tested the water with the Daisy Chains design to give us a feel of how everything works. It was new territory for me and we found the whole process fun. Posting out orders felt great and we felt like it was all happening.

As we all know it costs a small fortune to put out a solid line of garments. I was snowed under with client work and deadlines and was going out of my mind because I didn't want to compromise Big Bad City by not giving it 100% focus. In my head I knew what I wanted to do and I was driving Chris mad with constant delays and set backs. We basically put everything on hold. I designed as much as I could in the background, knowing one day we would be able to launch. I'm a perfectionist and it could well be my biggest flaw. If something is not 100% it bugs the hell out of me. If I had my way we would be launching with a mini movie and animations galore.

Chris came to me with the Kickstarter concept. I was hesitant at first but then thought sod it. We have nothing to lose. It will be a good chance to test the waters of interest and a great way for me to get wheels in motion around the client work. Hopefully you will check out the vid and like what you see. Big Bad City is the chance for me to experiment as an artist, showcase the kind of work I love to draw and paint. Basically it is a vent for my personality and creativity. I hope you guys like what I have come up with and pledge, hopefully this is just the first step in something special with longevity.

Much love

Lovell

I'm glad you said that. He's one of my favourites. He nearly didn't make the cut!

    Everything looks amazing!

I'm just going to be honest here for a minute, and don't take this at all as a jab towards your work because you're one of the most talented artists I've ever seen in the merch world. With that said...

These designs feel incomplete and not as strong as your work typically is, rushed even - especially the skull one. I'm really not a fan of the logo, the website feels like a Wordpress template and completely counter to the aesthetic of the brand, and the coffee mugs don't really make sense to me as an item for this particular brand. For a project 3 years in the works, this feels like it was put together hastily and without a whole lot of thought into the execution behind it all - it just seems like a collection of designs that you didn't use elsewhere. The tiger piece even feels like an early/unused rendering of the Tiger Mantra design you posted here.

Anyway, like I said, I love your work, but this just doesn't feel complete and fell kind of flat for me. Regardless, good luck with this - I hope it works out for you and it grows into something as awesome as I can imagine it being in the future.

Hey Jason! Thanks for your thoughts, sorry it's not your cup of tea. I have loads more I have been working on for this which hasn't been revealed yet. I'm sure it's not going to be everyones cup of tea, but as an artist I'm having fun with it and hopefully I can churn out some stuff more to your taste in the future :) Early days yet!

Most of the time what you can put on a t-shirt and what you should put on a t-shirt aren't really in line. The skull design is one of the most wearable of the bunch, in my opinion.

Great job and good luck, Chris! Looking forward to seeing what you do with this.

While I'd agree the website could probably use a backdrop(especially at larger resolutions where there's a great deal of dead space), I don't think it's too out of touch with keeping within a simple/navigable aesthetic and drawing your eyes to the Borderlands/Mad Max/Fall Out/Rage design keys of the brand itself.

I also certainly get where you're coming from when comparing it to his other work, but in my opinion the bulk of his work is best suited for other mediums that are not apparel. Especially with the large color details and more painterly stuff he does, it's hard to portray that truly outside of print work. So to that end, certain concessions need to be made to make things printable and without breaking the bank on print colors. The skull design if anything is more of the ideal design note for that post-apocalyptic/nomad gang look and probably my 2nd favorite of the designs(I really love that Terra Aqua shirt, and the Daisy Chains design is nice too).

But anyway, I think the logo could use some work in my personal opinion. I'm sure that's something that will evolve over time and become a little more cohesive aesthetically with the designs though. Good luck Chris, certainly have a great start here and plays on those heartstrings for the post-apocalyptic styling.
  • GNARZILLA

Looks good, has a Rook feel to it. Some of the work looks like metal band merch, not sure if its a good or bad. Undoubtedly your work is always on point.
  • Christopher Lovell

Thanks for the feedback guys! All taken on board and appreciated :) Quarter of the way to our target on Kickstarter. Fingers crossed!
  • Lion Caster

Not gonna lie, man. When I first stumbled on this a few months after I released Lion Caster back in 2011 or so, I was super nervous that Big Bad City was going to completely blow it out of the water.

But then I saw that you're trying to do something completely different within the same genre that you and I love. Besides, Lion Caster is about to go into a new direction, So I'm not worried anymore, haha.

But, seriously. Your character design is amazing - especially Klutz the Hyena with the boot, absolutely charming. I disagree with the naysayers on the logo, it's very simple and marketable in my opinion. It kind of looks like a cheesy Post-Apoc 80's movie logo.

It's cool to see you finally release this on Mintees, best of luck on the Kickstarter, guys.

Thanks so much! I'm actually very fond of the logo too. It took a lot of work. But I guess we all have different tastes. I've got a lot of vision for this so hopefully If we hit our target I can really start getting my teeth into everything and making this a lot more special :) Best of luck with the new Lion Caster direction!

looks amazing Chris! What style Gildan's are you printing on? I figured Soft Style but wasn't sure.

I loved the video mostly for you and your buddies accents but also because the art is amazing. You know I am a big fan. Best of luck with the brand and the Kickstarter. I'm sure you'll kill it.
