This is unreal. Do any of you follow college sports at all? Not you mates from across the pond, because I'm not sure of the coverage over there, but in the US, this is HUGE. This is fucking NUTS.

what a dirt bag and piece of shit for saying he was tricked.

I just watched the interview. Ugh. I hope deadspin is wrong to be honest, because they worded it in a VERY negative light for Teo.

We'll see tomorrow during his interview.

I work for a collegiate clothing company (Texas A&M). Needless to say our office was pretty nuts when the story dropped.

I'm debating designing a "4600 Total Yards, 0 Fake Dead Girlfriends" shirt.

  • Who is Ryan C.

  • mhooper

We posted a joke on our facebook about it and got a mixed response. I don't understand how a joke about a fake girl can be insensitive.

So much for a boring offseason. haha

The girl isn't fake...the actual individual exists, the only issue is Te'o wasn't actually conversing with the real girl but someone posing as her(using her images, etc.). I think what most people aren't getting is it's not like he made the story up, he got played. Maybe he's naive and shouldn't have felt such a bond to someone he met online that supposedly lived across the country, but millions of people do this. His biggest fault here is really saying that they had met more than anything(though there are largely conflicting stories on this, as other football players who are also Samoan have said that there is indeed an individual by the name and that Te'o had been on an aid mission with other Samoan athletes where the girl also attended). This is the big issue, being embarrassed of dating a girl online.

Also, none of it really matters since she supposedly died the same day as his grandmother(who did actually die on September 11th, 2012). I'd probably say a death of a grandparent is just as much, if not more of a reason to play "inspired" than this...but maybe that's just me. -shrug-
  • cityhall

Yeah but he's telling sports illustrated that they fall asleep on the phone together and you can hear her breathing on the other line when he wakes up. Who in god's name is pranking someone so hard that it is their full time job like this? He knew. He's a liar

I just can't really buy that. Why wouldn't he correct all these stories coming out about the meeting after a football game at Standford etc? Why would he and his parents let all these inaccurate articles be released?
  • ShineOn

I have no clue what to believe. But I guess faking the death of a fake girl isn't half as bad as some of the shit that has happened in the NFL in recent years (Vick, Rosenberger, etc)

I'm hoping this turns out to be a cruel prank played on Te'o but a lot of stuff makes it look like he was in it. Also, weird fact - the girl whose photos they used was from the town I grew up in.

I don't know. That was a lot of redditors conclusion on /r/nfl and /r/cfb, but deadspin posted this earlier today

The debate among teammates wasn't whether or not Manti actually knew this girl - it was clear that they had been in contact; no, players just didn't think that it was fair to call Lennay Kekua Manti's girlfriend, period (it is well-known on campus that he has had relations with other girls during his time at Notre Dame).

Of course this is Deadspin quoting college spun, so take it for what it is.

This is a more football thread, so I don't mind bill-jacking it a bit.

Marrone wants to run the KGun, which is amazing to me because Spiller is an awesome run/catch back. The KGun is pretty much what the Patriots run, and what the Bills ran in the early 90's.

The Bills have been talking about wanting to run the hurry up since Losman... not going to happen. I don't know if it's there conditioning, but they can never seem to run it well. They should just run the 3 yard and a cloud of dust. They have the line for it and Spiller would run it ok. I think they should snag another RB if a talented one falls to the third round(Randle, Jamison, Taylor, Bell) so they can rotate to keep Spiller fresh and get Nassib ASAP.

Really odd story but as mentioned above nowhere near as bad as someone like Michael Vick

Dont think it will have any impact on his draft pick - I still say he goes 1st round

No thanks on a RB. I moonlight as a sports scout and position management is a huge part of that. Our backfield has been re-tooled a million times. We seem to draft a RB every year for no reason. If we had just stuck with what he had, we'd have McGahee and Marshawn Lynch, which would be fine and probably equal to Fred Jackson and CJ Spiller. Especially when you consider the players we wanted to take instead of Spiller (Jason Pierre Paul, Gronk)

I like Nassib, but I don't want to touch him with the first two round draft picks, would love him in the third. I just think unless you're getting Geno, or Barkley, you shouldn't be using one of your two first round picks on a QB. This draft is weak outside of the Linebacker position, and I honestly wouldn't mind doubling up on LB's this year. Damontre Moore, Mingo, Minter, or Werner would all be suitable 1st round LB's for me.

I just think we're in a good place. Cordarrelle Patterson would be ideal for me if we don't go LB.

Well, he was projected as high as the 8th pick, and as low as about 17th. He could go anywhere from 8 - 40 now.

So it'll hurt, even if he won't plummet like Burficit did.

The whole "weak QB draft class" has been overblown by the media, I think. I wouldn't say this draft class is any weaker than 2 years ago, which was ranked as an ok class. Honestly, this is the class many have been waiting for. Smith had set records and would have won the heisman if his defense wasn't awful. Bray is a big QB who had the misfortune of playing under a coach who hated his guts, Wilson and Murray have been in the discussion for years and all 4 four have put up great numbers. Then there is Barkley, who was the preseason heisman favorite but had a terrible season filled with injuries. Nassib, who I am sold on(and is projected to go in the 1st and 3rd), Glennon, Jones, Emanuel, Carder and Lil' Rodgers. There is also Colby Cameron(leader of the nation's best offense, didn't throw a pick through 10 games, got robbed of a bowl game) and Doege(Air Raid QB with 70% completion? Fuck yeah!), but they're not expected to get drafted.

Linebacker is deep, but only because 50% of them are moving to DE and dedicated Pass Rushers once they enter the league. I'm hoping Jarvis Jones falls to where the Giants can snag him, with the lose of Osi and Tuck playing like crap and all. Unfortunately, the Cowboys are cockblocking the pick. I highly doubt Jones will fall to 19, but if he does, I'm guessing the Cowboys will trade down unless Lewan/Matthews/Fisher or really anyone else who can easily replace Free is still on the board and at threat to get selected and the team trading up will definitely get him.

As for Te'o draft stock, it is unknown. We have yet to have the combine, the workouts, and he declined the invitation to Senior Bowl a day or so before the whole mess came out, so we play the waiting game until spring.

As a Falcons fan who had to go through the Vick thing+Petrino quitting on his team mid season the following year, I fully agree.

    Petrino reference!

I'm over the Vick business, I live near and go to school/work in Philly and the people misjudge him ALL the time on the radio. He got the same treatment as any other person would and served 2 years, get over it and judge his football playing. I can't tell you how many times I've heard people on both sides of the fence argue and not have one realistic fact.

Either way, I just hope Kelly can make better draft choices than Reid did for the last 14 years aside from the 5 players that actually worked out and develop Foles more. I'm over this run and gun option offense shit, still hasn't gotten past the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Yes sir. I follow you on twitter, you're a Phillies fan as well, yeah? I have a Phillies tattoo!

I love Kelly. I think he is a HUGE boom or bust type of coach though. But he's very well respected by everyone in coaching circles. BB in NE goes to him for advice, Sean Payton watches how he uses his RB's, etc. He doesn't know SHIT about defense though, which could be rough.
  • Thomas Louis

    Oh, and he's a 3-4 guy. haha.

I've got nothing against Vick in general...he messed up, paid his due etc. But I still think it was a much bigger deal than this entire Te'o story, and it was a huge part in devastating the franchise I root for. As an Atlantan, Vick was the "savior of the city" in his time here until his incarceration, and a lot of people hate him. However, you still see TONS of people sporting Vick jerseys around here(though partially because official jerseys are expensive and not many people go out and buy multiple; as an aside Matt Ryan jerseys are now pretty heavily prevalent finally).

As for Chip Kelly, my sister goes to the University of Oregon on an athletic scholarship, so I tend to keep up with Oregon football(though it's also because they're an exciting team to watch). My roommate asked who I though, if anyone, would end up with Chip Kelly I said it had to be Philly. They have the best personnel of available coaching jobs to fit his offense. They have speed(Maclin, Shady McCoy and DeSean) and athleticism necessary to running a hyper tempo offense. The only question is if Foles can handle it. He's pretty mobile, but isn't a running QB. Kelly's offense kinda requires the option/zone read to operate at the tempo he preaches...so I wouldn't get my hopes up if you want a change of offensive philosophy.

Now with that said, as an Atlantan I'm also programmed to hope Philly fails in all sports endeavors...so, yeah :p
  • Andrew Haines

Haha yeah after last season I can't WAIT for baseball, although I can't say we'll be snagging our 6th Div Champ with the way the Nats and Braves have stacked in comparison this offseason.

I don't have a problem with Kelly, I don't really know how he handles everything until it happens, so I'm open minded. The only thing I worry about is if he'll get a real shot. I know he's a talented dude, but if he doesn't handle the fans well enough AND deliver, he won't stay long. I really like Foles, and I think he has a real shot at being an above average QB and I would HATE to waste a high draft pick on another damn QB with the way out defense is right now. I have a feeling our offense will be back to one of the best next season with everybody healthy on the line and the players Merkison mentioned, the defense needs a huge overhaul though and can't be ignored, our offense isn't that dominate and won't be no matter who he uses at QB next season so we NEED to improve drastically. Also, fuck Dallas and NYG. As many Giants and Cowboys fans I see around here, I just don't understand it.
