I'm stoked to see that my Catstronauts design has been printed now as normal print, a Limited Edition print, and now I see it's even been printed on a hoodie. Design By Humans is even using it as their main twitter image. The thing is, I haven't received any compensation besides the initial Shirt of the Day and Shirt of the Week winnings. I feel like I should have received additional compensation seeing as how the design has done this well after 3 years. Am I wrong in thinking this? Has anyone else ran into this problem? Are they no longer doing the Rockstar rewards? I find this a bit frustrating.

you're not wrong in thinking that, but what does their fine print say about reprinting?

Well I'm not quite sure, but here's the break down for the Rock Star program. I have a very hard time believing that a design that won 3 years ago has not hit any of these milestones. It has been reprinted multiple times, printed as a Limited Edition shirt, and is now one of 4 designs they chose to print for hoodies. That on top of them choosing to use it as their Twitter profile image. I don't think they'd be using this design so much if it wasn't selling like crazy. I'm just feeling a little taken advantage of.

wasnt this design in the ripoff, bootleg, and stolen art thread?

always just makes me think of this:

not sure which way the ball swung.

    Hi MSTR_CTRL,

Firstly let me say that you know you can email me about this stuff any time. Secondly we spoke about this and I explained that limited edition runs are small and don't make as significant numbers as you may think, the idea is to offer a different product in very limited numbers. All sales are totalled from hoodies, tees, reprints and limited editions and go towards the Rockstar Program. Just because it's been reprinted doesn't actually mean the shirts have sold. Once you have "SOLD" the number above then you will automatically be paid.

I will look at your sales data specifically today and see how close you are or if a mistake has been made. I appreciate that you may be a bit frustrated and I am here to help with all issues and problems. If we owe you cash you will get it, DBH takes this stuff very seriously. Also once you agree to DBH T&C's you hand over all art rights which means we can use the art for promotional graphics, such as twitter.

Sidenote: Did that book rip you off? I'd like to know. If they did I'm gonna send a link to our legal eagle and if they didn't then you are in violation of our Ts&Cs. :O Let me know.

Looks like that book got a new cover:

I vaguely remember this issue and I am pretty sure the book published way after the tee was released. Maybe MasterControl can shed more light on it.

Whooaaaaaaaaaaaaa. I never saw this. Total ripoff. Wow. They literally must have just copy and pasted my design...

haha yeah the guy who made the book, david thorne, is notoriously difficult to deal with via email.

first edition of that book had this cover:

and he was legally threatened by penguin and basically talked them in circles.

    Hi Wotto,

I really appreciate the response. I didn't realize that was you that emailed me before. I just wanted to see if anyone else had any experience with the process. I'm not trying to call DBH out. I love your guys company and what you're doing. I'm just generally curious. I guess it just seems crazy that it hasn't hit one of the milestones when it seems like it's become such a popular design. I'm not saying you guys are misleading me by any means. I hope you understand.

As far as the twitter image, etc. I am completely aware that I signed away rights for that kind of usage. I just note that because if people are that stoked on the design and you guys even want to use it as your main image that it must be making you guys money. That's all. I love seeing that as your twitter image. I was so pumped when I first saw that.

And if you need proof that this design is my original work, I can send you the orginal hi res PSD, reference images, etc. I'm sure you could go back and check out the date that book was published and the date I submitted my design to DBH. It's a shame to see people completely ripping off the hard work of others. Believe it or not I put a lot of time and though into that design to make it unique.

Thanks again for your response. I really do appreciate it.

Wow. I just read through that correspondence he had with Penguin. Dude apparently doesn't understand how all of that works.

he's absolutely hilarious and a brilliant designer.

read some of the other things on his site. incredible and pointless all at the same time.

hahahah. I don't know if I've ever seen those two words in the same sentence. I didn't realize he was a designer. I didn't read enough into it. Innnnnnteresting.

Oh man. Now that I'm reading through his stuff, I see what you mean. He is pretty brilliant. I'm more flattered that he ripped my design than I am annoyed haha.

    No worries I completely understand.

I am checking your numbers right now, also hoodies just shipped so that might play into the mix. I will email you shortly.

Proof won't be necessary, I actually emailed the publishers when our marketing team spotted the book earlier this year. I think that explains why they changed the cover, maybe. He is quite a character from what I have read.

I'll be in touch. No worries and no hard feelings

    Finally. Submit more art.

Thank you so much! It means a lot that a real person is actually talking to me. I'll be submitting some stuff soon! I have been so wrapped up in the day job that my personal work has been completely neglected.
