Stumbled across this Facebook page today, as some of my friends had 'liked' it.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/First-750000-Get-a-Free-Smiley-Hat-To-Help-Promote-Our-New-Clothing-Line/216218215080241

They claim to be giving away a free hat to the first 750,000 people who like the page, to support the launch of a new clothing company.

That works out to be:
Wholesale hat @ approx $5 per unit x 750,000 = $3,750,000

Sad thing is that there are at least 93,284 gullible people already convinced this is legit!

Precisely. It'll end up becoming the "I think Casey Anthony is a hero" page.

This could be fantastic way of researching into what a customer wants/buys.

Theres been a couple of hundred posts saying what colour hat they want in the time it took me to write this.

well this is awkward, i didn't really look this over

It's like those people who reblog stuff on tumblr like a Nikon or a Macbook that was an 'unwanted present'. Who the hell doesn't want those? All you have to do is be following me and reblog blah blah blah...

$3,750,000 + Shipping = probably double that. EEK!

    Brilliant plan though.

if you google image search "make tea not war" the mug in the profile picture is one of the first hits. I would assume if they actually were to order 500,000 mugs, that they would be ripping someone else's already made design.

if you sit there and refresh the page, it grows at a rate of approximately 10-15 fans per second... already at 250K
  • Sam Weinberg

    Thats so crazy
  • Rico

Just refreshed every half a second seven times. Never saw the same face twice. And strangely enough, three of my friends had already liked it
  • Tony A

    What the ... a new comment/like every 10-30 seconds ? that's crazy.

The display picture comes up if you search Smiley face new era
    http://styleengine.com/2009/10/05/fames-x-new-era-smiley-face-59fifty-fitted/
and they ask you to send them shipping details, for any country in the world.
    Quite clearly a scam.

I want a hat. A hat made of meat.
  • RyanDevine

I posted this exact thing earlier in a status on facebook, people are so stupid to think its legit.
I can't see any believable point about it though....

every ten seconds on my news feed it says "(insert name here) and 10 others like (page name)" for this scam.

hahahah oh god. I commented on another one of these things.

I wrote a little post on the wall explaining how these designs don't even belong to this fake brand "that needs support", that they stole the images from http://www.coolcats.fr

    They just deleted my wallpost.
    Fuck these scammers

Yea that seems to be the popular one right now. I can't believe I have friends liking it. I had to tell them, they weren't going to get it.

If you can get people to like it, then cool, because you can definitely promote your brand. I'm curious as to what will happen if they ever do hit 100,000 people. I wonder how many people will get mad when they don't get their free sweater or t-shirt if it's the other one mentioned at the beginning of the post, or if people will not care.
  • Sam Weinberg

The funny part is that there are no links or any information on the page about their non-existent brand. Last time I checked that isn't promoting..
