I've recently been checking the site out when I've had a spare minute or have been considering travelling. I love the concept of being able to find someones couch to sleep on for a few nights in a different country though I'm a bit skeptical about it.. mostly because I'm a chicken.

Has any one hosted/surf? and if so how was the experience?

You can check out the website here.

I used to do it until I got eaten by bed bugs in Holland last summer and thought this has to be this quickest way of getting your home infected by bugs.

You can't let BED bugs ruin things for you, especially if you're suppose to be staying on a couch in the first place.

    Seriously though, that sounds horrible.

My sister used to do this all the time. If I had a house completely of my own I'd host babes all the time.

I honestly would love to go to the UK and do this, but yeah...I don't want to get raped.

I did it Quebec and it was an awesome experience. The girl hosted tons of people and she even gave us the key to her place, and slept at her boyfriends place and left the place to me, my friend, and some other guy from Denmark. Can't wait to do it again.

I think the idea is to try and surf the couches of people with good feedback and NOT use it as a dating site, I remeber clicking on the profile of a guy (not the best looking) who had negative feedback off a bunch of women with the majority of them saying "He's a nice guy, but he tried to kiss me and he's been calling me and sending me messages"

I want to go to France.

And I'm sure you'll be fine Craig, Germany is home of the.... bratwurst..
On second thought maybe you should invest in some pepper spray.

I wouldn't worry so much about this in the UK, my sisters got a friend at Sussex University (literally like 5 miles max from Brighton) who always seems to put people up for a few evenings and is pretty darn cool also.

I actually got to live with one of the founders for a few weeks in Alaska back in 2004, and he was one of the coolest guys I have ever met. He was way more interested in making CS work well for its members than making any money from it. He could have probably gotten rich several times over from the site but preferred to keep the site run by a collective.

Anyway, I have surfed couches allover Central America and it is a great way to meet locals and get a cool experience wherever you go. You can tell from people's profiles (for the most part) if they are going to be freaks or not. I got to meet a lot of awesome people that I wouldn't have otherwise because of CS. I hosted a handful of people in Tucson too, and it feels good to be able to meet and be helpful travelers when you are stuck in your day to day.

Also, there are quite a few safety things built into the site if you are worried about security. There are different levels of being vouched for by other surfers that have met you as well as all of the email correspondences are recorded. You can tell a lot about a person by the reviews given by other people.

    Brett's right on with this.

As long as you stay with verified members who have been vouched for multiple times you'll be just fine. I've surfed a few times and the hosts couldn't have treated us any better. Great experience!
