i am damned if i do, damned if i don't around here, so i'll open it up to you guys until i get a better system put in place.

here are a few tees in the queue and what i see as the definite "on the fence" type stuff, and i'd like to hear everyone's opinions, a simple "yay" or "nay" would suffice.

1)

(ignore the white dots on the mockup, tinygrab's doing)

personally can't get into stuff like this at all, just feels like 90's comic book artwork thrown on a t-shirt, but i'm sure it will be met with only comments from malaysia, indonesia and the philippines saying...

2)

i have a hard time telling each of his shirts from the next, all involve someone facing the the side with an open mouth. http://mintees.com/people/192827-butch-the-butcher

3)

while killer napkins is a longstanding emptees regular, i hardly feel this is his best work (sorry man) i posted this in tinychat last night without saying who did it, and about 5 people said it shouldn't make it. i don't want to play favorites.
  • gaunty

First 2 no. The third is great apart from the text. jason has freely admitted he doesn't like his text work so I say post it so that he can hear commentand improve it. It's Prince for god sake.
  • Andrew Haines

    1. Nay - bad anatomy, terrible mumfaux
    2. No idea
    3. Could be easily better with shirt color and type changes, as for now no.

EDIT: Agree with Colin for improvement
  • Bob Kawa

    1. nay
    2. nay
    3. yay
  • Psyched

A yes or no will suffice but i'd prefer to explain.
I dont like/ would wear any of them, but its not particularly that any are necessarily bad, its just my opinion. It depends wether you want mintees to be more similar to bandjob than emptees i suppose. Whether you want only the best of the best to get through...

Then again if these dont make it, i dont think a design like this should either...

    http://mintees.com/tees/334236-rad

    http://mintees.com/tees/334129-fyq

    http://mintees.com/tees/334098-patience

    http://mintees.com/tees/334046-dead-portrait

Maybe you should only deny the obviously shit designs and then put a system where if a tee doesn't get a certain amount of love in a set time it will be deleted?

Personally i would say no to the first one and yes to the last 2... maybe, if oyu want mintees to carry on the emptees vibe.
  • selfhighfive

    #1 isn't really my thing, but I think it's a yes.
It should be re-mocked before it's accepted though. Those random white pixels make it look pretty bad.

    #2 is a no.

#3 I'm kind of on the fence about at the moment.
  • Cant Draw Can Write

I think all three of those are solid enough to be voted on. They wont win tee of the day but they can at least get criticism from being seen on how to improve.

Dobi you said you "personally can't get into stuff like this at all" for the first design. Well it shouldn't be about personal preference...I say yes to the first and third.
  • RACIDSQUARE

    1. yay (the mock up should be changed, there's white pixel around it)
    2. nay (if only this one was commisioned, yay)
    3. yay (there's potential work here, but the text is ruined it all)
  • sockmonkee

Definite 'nay' on the first two.

While I love Killer Napkins work, I really feel like the type hinders this particular design. Seeing what Collin wrote about KN's type work, I'd say nip it, maybe? No reason in having poor type work reflect negatively.

    Still love ya' Jason.

which is why i'm leaving it open to other people dum dum.
  • El Presidente

    1. nay because of the mockup
    2. nay
    3. nay nay
  • jared

I think all three should go up. The only reason I am on the fence about number two is that it says "Branding." If that said a fake band name or something, it'd be a no brainer.
  • dobi

ps. the white dots on the mockup on #1 are my fault, tinygrab does that sometimes in black areas.
  • selfhighfive

Something seems off about the severed head in #1 too. Maybe it should be changed to be more anatomically correct before it gets accepted as well.
Edit: Or it might be the perspective on the head, not really sure.
  • derekdeal

    1. sure - i know what style you're talking about and I'm personally sick of it myself but i think this piece stands on its own. i could see brandon heart posting something similar with no dispute.

    2. nah. the branding thing is a bummer

    3. sure - it's got some significant weak points but it also has a lot of potential. also commissioned which means someone else has a vested interest in the design and could probably benefit from the criticism.

  • Chreck

I kind of like number two
None of them are something i'd wear, but:
    1. decent colors, composition but i'm not huge on the anatomy, so i'm on the fence. the intestines or whatever at the bottom is just kinda lame
    2. should have put a fake brand on it or something to make it a little more official, and the type is okay (seems off to me), but the artist should try to branch off as far as their characters go; it seems a little repetitive rather than stylistic
    3. good illustration, but the type kills it for me. i say work on the type or something, because it obviously has potential

EDIT: i love the new edit and delete buttons :)
  • Tom Philibeck

    YAY
    NAY
    YAY
  • Anthony Smith

    1. Ehhhhhhhh, dumb as hell but I suppose some people would like it, so yes.
    2. Nope.
    3. Kinda highlights an un avoidable issue that the system has at the moment. Illustration is pure class, text is poor. Based on how it is now, no. But could easily be something shit hot given constructive criticism.

I really do not envy your curating job right now haha, these are some tough calls.
  • RobotTiger

    1. nay
    2. nay
    3. nay
  • Chaddoesdesign

I kind of find No.1 a little offensive.

i posted #1 but i'm still on the fence about it. i might change my mind, i think "stupidity of concept" might play a part in work. i feel like gore for the sake of gore is just really really dumb, no matter how hell illustrated the top half is, the bottom is just really dumb.
  • Colin

    agreed, especially about #3
  • alex@graphicsover.be

    1) yes
    2) No
    3) Yes
  • atomicchild

    1) tired of that subject matter but it is well done so YES
    2) not like it is horribly done Nay
    3) I think Jason has done better but it is definitely not bad YES
  • quakerninja

I don't think this will solve the on the fence problem.

The time will come when mintees members outnumber old emptees members, so relying on everyone knowing better won't do for long.

What are some more criteria you can add to the Why not approved list.
It's pretty vague right now. Most of the why my stuff gone post are legit. There isn't any info really.

    Technical merit.
The line work is unintentionally sloppy,
Work looks like an amateur kid drawing
Work is cliche, Style Bite, Rip, not original

The other option would be to let everything in, except the obvious ones, but fix how tees are sorted so that no one ever has to see them if they don't want to..

What about adding a hide tee button, kind of like an ignore user feature, then its up to an individuals choice if they want to see it or not. Tailor the site to those who are using it and there preferences.
  • ChrisAnnihilation

    Hell nay
  • Killer Napkins

    fuck you Chris!

I JK.. nah it is understandable for sure. I agree with you guys, the text is pretty weak. And Colin is correct, text is my weakness I believe; though I am working on it more so lately.

I have some better designs I am waiting to try an get up though. So, to be straight with you, I am not upset or angry, and won't repost either.

Also, I am thankful for the critiques getting thrown around in here. It doesn't seem to happen that often.
  • Alejandro Prez

    1. Nay
    2. Nay
    3. Yay
  • dobi

no hard feelings jason, i just think the text was killing it.
  • andrE w.

I am inclined to say no to all 3, but definitely no to the second one, haha.
  • FilthyCandy

Someone could work on some artwork for days for you to not like it and deny it, surely thats a bit harsh? Not everyone likes the same thing man!
  • DrowningDesign

    1) Nay, a little bit dime-a-dozen. We saw a lot of this gore stuff on emptees.

    2) I actually like this, but it could be better. Id like so see a bit of background to give it context (like a cactus or something) in spot red, just to balance out that gap in the bottom right. And the use of a better brand name.

    3) Nay, That text kills the design
  • dobi

i'm sorry, i didn't realize every tee deserved posting. here, enjoy these.

  • Killer Napkins

yay to 4 for sure haha

no hard feelings at all either man.
  • El Presidente

HAHAHAHHAHH you know Dobi, have you ever stopped to think that you might actually be dead already and hanging out in Hell?

And this is the boulder you must push up the hill every day :D
  • TylerBramer

Perhaps create a sub-category of tees called Sub Par or something where all of the 'fence' designs can get pushed into. It keeps them separate from the obvious YES ones and still allows them to get feedback and notice.
  • JoeBaronDesign

    1- yay
    2- nay
    3- nay

The next couple are all nay
