where did you photo manipulation designers learn your Photoshop skills for photo manipulation tees? Links and/or tips would be helpful

I learned, primarily, through trial and error. I've been designing in that style for the last 2-3 years. I would advise beginning with a concise idea of the look you want your work to have and then endlessly experimenting with different strategies to obtain that very look.

Photo Manipulation is an incredibly difficult medium to work in. When it's done incorrectly, it looks AWFUL. However, rest assured you will do it incorrectly for a while. No shame in learning. :-)

Some designers I recommend scoping out are: Mark Weaver, Jerico Santander, and Karol Kolodzinski . Also, scope out Jeff Finley as well. He doesn't work in that style often, but when he does, it's tasty.

I had two digital manipulation classes in school, so take formal classes if you have the opportunity. If not then I would recommend learning all of the selection techniques. Master quick mask mode. Use as many layers as you need. Know how to realistically layer images based on the hardness/softness of their edges in relationship to the depth of field you are going for. It would also probably work in your favor to use images with similar light sources. Do these things + experiment like crazy.

Play a lot in PS until you find it really easy. People fall into a trap sometimes though and stop drawing things and just spend hours on end searching google for things to manipulate.
