Top 10 Scariest films YOU'VE ever seen.
Posted September 17th, 2010 by Matt Ryan
List em! Films that actually caused you nightmares, not necessarily favorites. #1 being scariest.
Some other forum posted this same thread and peoples choices were so mindblowingly stupid (someones #1 was Zombieland.) I had to see what you guys thought.
Here are mine:
01. The Exorcist (cant watch it alone to this day)
02. Blair Witch Project (screw the woods, no thanks)
03. The Shining (speaks for itself)
04. Dolly Dearest (Chucky got owned by this film)
05. Pet Sematary (one word: Zelda)
06. Black Christmas (1974)
07. House of The Devil (to add a more recent film in)
08. The Cell (total mind blow, imagery is terrifying)
09. It (the line "We all float down here" is more off putting than anything)
10. 1408 (also recent, but its like a new "The Shining")

snow white and pinnochio are scary enough for me, not even joking,

I saw the Blair Witch in the theater the night before camping... I didn't like it at first and made fun of it all freaking day, and then as soon as I was alone in a tent in the woods I realized how awesome and terrifying it was.
And heck yeah, pet sematary. This face still haunts my dreams at night

I watched Eraserhead for the first time a couple weeks ago... It wasnt necessarily scary ... but very weird and eerie.. and just awesome I think as far as artistically... Also I watched Salvador Dali's Un chien andalou short film... again really weird and creepy for what it is... very awesome though...
I have been really dissappointed in horror movies now adays.. Maybe I am just immune to what I see in them, or numb from all the fucked up shit I have seen via internet... ALthough I think the last movies that I watched that kinda was more like an on edge movie was The Collector.. .it was cheesy, but it had those things that made you jump kinda

2. Rawhead Rex ( my first "monster" movie that always made me hate going outside in the dark)
3. Pet Sematary (Fuck that shit)
4. The Last Broadcast ( About the Jersey Devil, sort of like Blair Witch in a way)
5. The Exorcist (obvious for most horror fans)
6. The Shining ( got damn)
7. The Mist ( not that scary, but the ending left a really big impression me and messes with my emotions )
8. House of The Devil ( brilliant, perfect horror movie in my opinion)
9. Creepshow 2 ( the hitchhiker skit )
10. Squirm ( fucking hate worms )

honorable mention: cat's eye (the troll in the 3rd segment)

I'm with you, dude! I was creeped out so much by those things the first time I watched that movie.
...wait people are afraid of The Shining? I mean, I LOVE it, but it's not remotely scary to me.
The Ring is terrifying though, I'd probably say that's the scariest movie I've seen. Either that or Ju-On. (The Original Japanese version of The Grudge)

Love that list. Number 1 backed.

2. The Excorcist
3. It (I seriously could not walk by sewers and was terrified of taking showers for years. Also, Me and a friend saw 2 balloons floating under a sewer once and ran home ahhh!!!)
4. Children of the corn
5. The Ring (After seeing this, my mom used to wear this onsie type pajama thing and sleep in entirely wet hair and she came down stairs slowly while we were watching and told me to turn it down OH MY GOD WAS I SCARED SHITLESS!!!! haha)
6. Pet Cemetary
7. Flatliners (used to creep me out as a kid)
8. Dolls
9. Childs Play ( That hammer hit used to give me chills!!!)
10. I don't remember the name of it but it was this movie where people would throw up this Yellow Stuff and turn inside out. It was sooooo creepy as a kid
DanielAndHisArt said about 8 years ago
Good call on Flatliners, that one almost made my list. I watched that one many late nights on HBO after the parents went to sleep. Always freaked me out.
Cutty. said about 8 years ago
The original shining never really scared me, anyone ever seen the made for tv mini series? That one actually freaked me out more than the original (I just can't take Shelley Duvall seriously)
Oh, Derek, Enemy Mine? That movie's so awesome, never thought of it as scary though, thats pretty funny haha :)

i did have the guts to watch paranormal activity.. it wasn't to bad. except for the part where you could hear the thing come across the landing then as the bf got up it ran away and slammed the door.. thats what made me freak, other than that it was ok

Can't think of any scary movies right now, the only one that comes to mind was Child's Play, I watched when I was 6, I have never looked a porcelain doll the same way. Creepy shit.

2. The first Hills Have Eye's remake was brilliant and completely disturbing. The second HHE turned into a garbage stereotype amongst action/horror films. (and it really bummed me out...)
3. 28 days later totally got on my nerves. It wasnt crazy scary, but they presented the idea so well it just bothered me.
4. The first time I saw the Blair Witch Project was late at night and alone. I was pretty much scared and paranoid the rest of the night until I fell asleep in the living room with the lights on haha. (I'm going to definitely have to watch the last broadcast, I haven't seen it yet!)
5. I sadly watched The Thing when I was nine. Enough said.
6. The Strangers was the first film in a long time to actually scare me bad. It was like good old fashion paranoia/jumpy messed up shit with a bunch of folks behind creepy white masks. I know a lot of people dissed it, but it really got me haha.
7. Vacancy. Pretty much good all around. It was kinda the same situation with The Strangers.
8. Cujo. Messed me up. I don't like dogs because of that movie. The book didn't help at all (and god knows why I decide to read it.)
9. One of worst for me is the original Amityville Horror. The flies with window made me twitch all over. Just a good scary flick haha.
10. a mix of everyone else's choices.
Cutty. said about 8 years ago
And The Hills Have Eyes scared me in a totally different way. Yikes.

the fly
and when i was younger, the first amityville horror, when the little girl comes in talking about her imaginary friend, and it looks outside in the dark and theres two glowing red eyes.
good call on poltergeist derek, i totally forgot about those.
markusmanson said about 8 years ago
1. Paranormal activity (makes me hard to sleep for 5 days)
2. Blair Witch Project (the ending really made me speechless)
3. Ju On (the original Japanese version of the Grudge)
4. The Ring (the original Japanese version)
5. Alone (Thailand's)
6. The Haunting in Connecticut
7. Shutter (Thai ver)
6. The Exorcist
7. Phobia (thailand's 4 short movies, one of them is hillarious, definitely recommended movie)
8. Coming Soon (Thai)
That's all I can think for now I think.
Mostly, Japanese and Thailand's movies really scare the shit out of me.

Walking into the theater, I was completely expecting a crappy movie. But I was legitimately freaked out by this film...ghost movies always get me. Watched it again on DVD and it didn't have the same effect, though.
02. Halloween ('78)
This film needs no explanation.
03. Pet Sematary
Matt said it.....Zelda.
04. Halloween II ('81)
I was heavily influenced by Michael Myers as a kid, and this movie kept me up at night on more than one occasion.
05. The Evil Dead
This one took me my complete surprise...totally freaked me out.
06. Candyman
Again, not expecting too much from this film but it was the first one in awhile to really scare me.
07. Halloween 4
Ok, I'm a huge Myers nerd. But I saw this in the theaters on October 30, 1988 and for those of you who remember, that's when the opening scenes of the film take place. And when they showed Michael for the first time, I freaked so much that I dumped my Coke on the guy in front of me. Say what you want, but this was a solid entry in the series and underrated in my opinion.
08. Jaws 4
I saw this in the theater when I was 10 and opted out of swimming in my pool that night.
09. Lady in White
Some scenes from that film still freak me out to this day.
10. Jurassic Park
For some reason, that movie got to me and had me looking for velicoraptors as I walked out of the theater.
While some of the films on this list are no-brainers, others made it on here due to the time and place when I saw them. I tried taking into account the times I recalled actually being scared. For instance, Jaws 4 isn't really that scary. But for a 10 year old in the theater? Yeah, it freaked me out. And by no means are these my "favorite films" (although some are - especially Halloween).

PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS!!!! seriously scared me when i was younger too, just creepy haha.
IT.
Haunting in Conneticut - i had to find pictures of kittens on the internet half way through.
Dead Silence was a bit scary too.
The Shining for obvious reasons.
The Thing.
Most of these arn't that scary but i'm a pussy when it comes to watching horror films... i love them but i hide for the build up to the gore:)
heat. said about 8 years ago
Maybe "Jaws" a little too.

yeah i know, kind of weird, but i was legitimately terrified to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night because i thought that floor was going to open up and eat me. Its the first time i ever considered that the ground underneath me wasnt safe.
good call dude, i almost listed that but thought i would be all alone. There's very few movies after the age of ten that could make the hair on the back of my neck stand up but that movie got to me. Totally fell short on the second viewing for me too
fright-rags said about 8 years ago
Yeah, I thought I'd be alone too! I totally agree though....very few movies I've seen past age 10 or so really "scared" me enough to lose sleep. But Stir of Echoes was definitely one of them. It stayed with me all night after I got home.
kiyomag said about 8 years ago
plus this movie.
