So one of my life goals is to make a series of vinyl toys, and this weekend, I decided to start that life goal early. It's still really crappy and in its early stages, but I'm going to keep working on it.

Either way, I'm pretty proud of it, and I'm going to be working on some other prototypes, and during my spring break I'm going to be molding and casting a bunch of them. Hopefully if they're polished enough, they'll be ready by summer for Lowdtown. Since I don't really want to work overseas, I'll most likely be doing them all by hand, but I think it'll be worth it. They'll be in super limited editions, but it'll be cool.

Well that's my rant, check it out.

Sorry for the crappy pic, took it with my laptop.

Haha, the paint job is terrible, but it's really smooth! I sanded this thing for like an hour! This is just a prototype, so as long as it makes a smooth cast, I'm happy.

Yea, that was my original idea, but then I realized that execution is much harder than expected. I'll work on it soon and see how it goes. I have awesome ideas for mouthcan as a vinyl figure though, so I really hope I can get it together.

    super cool man!

soo you could also try resin casting too.... this is a WAY indepth tutorial I had foudn a while back... but it is pretty badass.. i mean its typical for making resin casts of those garage kit figures, but it is helpful

Yea, I was thinking resin casting, I'm not sure what I'm doing yet, I'm going to go out and buy my casting stuff soon. I'm planning to resin cast with resin plaster, but I'm not sure how sturdy that stuff is. Probably wouldn't hold up to a fall too well. Have any experience with that stuff?

holy fucking shit! I've been to that site before, and it's unreal how amazing some of those dudes are. I'm going to try something a bit more detailed for my next figure (a la "I'm the Boss" design character).

Yea, I'm excited. I kind of went into it head first; I wish I researched and planned things better. But I'm excited regardless, and hopefully things turn out well. Check back tomorrow to see how the cast went!

I'm using rebound 25 silicone rubber. Thanks!
  • FuzzyInk

Ray, what kind of material are you going to be putting into the mold?

Edit: I'll take your advice and read up on the KidRobot forum.

I'm not really sure yet, but they might be a bit pricey. Considering all the labor and handwork that went into these, I feel like they are pretty valuable. Also, I"m going to be hand-numbering them, which adds a rare factor too. We'll see... haha. I have cool ideas for the packaging too!

Wow, you guys are so nice. Thanks, it really means a lot. Well, I finished painting and finishing the first 6 Mooks today, and they came out really nicely. I have a whole bunch of pictures to go with it, so I'll post to the Lowdtown blog later. I had a crazy idea for the packaging, but I'm not sure how realistic it is.

Thanks for all the support guys!
  • khay

It's not actually vinyl, I just used resin. I'm not sure where to get it besides online or a very hobby specific store.
